ASSURE Model

The ASSURE model is an instructional design process that helps teachers select, use, and evaluate technology and instructional resources.  ASSURE is an acronym that stands for the various steps in the model.

What is the ASSURE Model? - Victor Lozada Rivera

Analyze Learners

The first step in the process is for the teacher to analyze the attributes of her learners. There should be a focus on those learner characteristics which are associated with the desired learning outcomes. The information gathered will help you in the decisions that you make with respect to the other steps of the process. When you determine the character of the learners, it will guide you in choosing specific strategies and resources to aid the learning process.

The analysis of your learners should include:

  • The general attributes of your learners, such as age, academic abilities, gender, interest, etc.
  • Competencies ( prior knowledge, skills, and attitudes)
  • Learning styles ( visual, musical, verbal, logical, etc.)
State Standards and Objectives

After the analysis of the learner attributes, the teacher must state the standards and objectives for the learning module. This statement consists of a specification of what the learners will be able to do as a result of the instruction.

The objectives can be used in assessing the success of the students, perhaps for the grading process. Also, you can use them to let the learners know what they will accomplish through the class.

The mark of a good set of learning objectives is in conformity with the ABCD's well-stated objectives. They are as follows:
Tips to Write Clear Lesson Objectives in 10 Minutes

Audience - Who is the target audience? E.g.: students in the ELA class
Behavior - What is the task to be accomplished by the learner? E.g.: Distinguishing different types of natural resources
Condition - What are the constraints in which the learners will be expected to perform these tasks? E.g.: At the end of the session
Degree - How well the learner must perform for the performance to be considered acceptable?

The objectives statement should be formulated with the verbs that pinpoint the learning objective. A useful guide to the appropriate verbs to use is contained in Bloom's Taxonomy.

Select  Methods, Media, and Materials

The second "S" in the acronym stands for select methods, media, and materials. Given what your learning objectives are, it's necessary to pick instructional strategies, technology, and media that will bring about the results that you want.

       Selection process stage
  1.  Deciding on the appropriate method for the given learning tasks.
  2. Choosing an appropriate media format.
Utilize the methods, media, and materials

It is the step where you develop your plan for implementing your media and materials. For each type of media and material, the teacher selects and describes how they are going to implement the media in their lesson to help the learners meet the lesson objectives. The media, materials, and technology selected should be focused on carrying out the selected method.

Utilization procedures
  • Preview the materials
  • Practice the presentation
  • Prepare the environment
  • Present the material
Require Learner participation

This step requires you to describe how you are going to get each learner actively and individually involved in the lesson.  Students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning experience. Whatever your teaching strategy be sure to incorporate question and answer, discussions, group work, hands-on activities, and etc. This step provides opportunities for the learners to practice the capability being taught.

Evaluate and Revise

The final step in the ASSURE model is just as crucial as all others. In this step, you will evaluate the impact of your teaching on student learning. This includes evaluation of the methods, media, and materials that you used. The following questions are useful to ask during the evaluation:
  • Did your lesson meet the learning objectives that you planned? How will you determine whether the students reach the objectives? Is your way of assessing the students in line with your learning objective?
  • Can this lesson be improved? How? How are you going to assess the weakness in your presentation?
  • Was your choice of media and materials a good one? How will you assess the effectiveness of these tools?
  • Is it possible that the other technologies, media, and materials would done a better job?
The final step in your evaluation should focus on feedback from your students. Was their experience positive overall? Do they feel that they have reached your objectives and their own personal objectives? How will you determine whether or not your performance was effective?

In conclusion, the ASSURE process offers a practical guide for refining teaching techniques. Effective teaching evolves over time, and by using this structured approach, educators can continually enhance their methods for lasting improvement.
